Research in the Department is primarily, but not exclusively, focused
on retailing, financial services, e-business and entrepreneurship.
In retailing research there is a particular emphasis on retailer
internationalisation, market entry strategies and small, specialist
retailer activity. In financial services, the dominant research
interests cover financial markets and institutions, corporate finance,
cost efficiency analysis and e-business. At a more specific level,
work on credit unions, retail banking and European Monetary Union
has helped to establish an international reputation for the Department's
research. Research on e-business has addressed areas such as e-banking,
internationalisation, and the impact of e-business on small Irish
firms. Research in entrepreneurship has again focused on internationalisation
issues and also female entrepreneurship. Other areas of interest
include the public sector where the research focus in on the education
and health sectors. Regional economic analysis also features in
the research agenda with, for example, special interest taken in
regional databases.
Members of staff from the Department have published a variety of research articles
in a broad range of quality academic journals, including for instance
Marketing, Intelligence and Planning, European Journal of Marketing,
Journal of International Marketing, Journal of Marketing Management,
Managerial Finance, Explorations in Economic History, Studies in
Nonlinear Dynamics & Econometrics, European Economic Review, Applied
Financial Economics, Journal of International Entrepreneurship,
International Journal of Market Research, and the Service Industries
Journal.
It is a characteristic of the Department that members of staff are actively
engaged in research related activities outside the University, included
membership of editorial boards and panels, and through their involvement
in international research networks. While staff research is of a
strongly academic nature it is largely applied in character with
staff developing direct professional links with the banking and
finance industry, the retailing sector, the Northern Ireland education
sector and business, in general, in the Northern Ireland region.
The Department made a significant contribution to the University's overall
submission to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
The Department of Business, Retail and Financial Services has an established
postgraduate base. It has experienced a significant growth in its
taught Masters' Programmes and full-time PhD registrations in recent
years. Further information on research interests in the Department,
and on the range of subjects in which the Department can provide
advanced supervision, can be obtained from the Professors or other
academic staff.
