Department Report

Introduction by the Head of Department

The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management is looking forward to an exciting future, following the decision to move the Department from its current Portrush location. The Department will, from September 2008, be based in Belfast and in Coleraine. The range of programmes to be situated on the Belfast Campus includes BSc Hons Degrees International Hospitality Management, International Hotel & Tourism Management and Culinary Arts Management, whilst on the Coleraine Campus will be BSc Hons Degrees in International Travel & Tourism Management, International Travel & Tourism Studies with Language, Leisure, Events & Cultural Management and Consumer Studies.

The Department is already looking to the future with plans swiftly moving forward with the design and development of its new Kitchen/Restaurant facility – this complementing the newly refurbished state of the art Belfast Campus building.
Likewise on the Coleraine Campus refurbishment requirements for facilities required by programmes such as Consumer Studies are well into planning stage.

The academic staff within the Department are currently reviewing the range of courses on offer, examining the make-up of modules, their content and working with our industry partners to ensure that the next suite of revalidated programmes will have the ingredients required to meet the future demands of our stakeholders by being innovative, forward thinking and fit for purpose. The undergraduate programmes provide a natural route to the Masters in International Tourism Development and in International Hotel & Tourism Management – on both a part time and a full time basis. Again these programmes are constantly monitored to ensure the content is appropriate, applicable and challenging.
The MSc in Cultural Management is delivered completely by e-learning.

The Department continues to provide excellent learning opportunities which are student centred and client focussed by providing a vibrant learning environment, with courses which are creative and innovative, by strengthening links with industry, through the student placement programme, in research and development, industry lectures and participation in various conferences nationally and internationally.
